Unzip the 98lite distribution file into an empty directory on your hard disk and run 98lite.exe. If you know that you
have the windows98 setup files (CAB files) on your hard disk then unzip 98lite into that same directory and run
98lite.exe. If you have previously installed windows98 using setup files on your hard disk (many off-the-shelf computers
do this) then 98lite will find them automatically and move itself into that "setup directory". If 98lite can
not find any setup files on your hard disk then it will prompt you for your windows98 CDROM and copy all the setup files (about
100 MB) to the same directory on your hard disk that contains 98lite.
To perform a clean installation of windows98 using 98lite, you will need:
a. Windows 98 CD
b. OPTIONAL - If you want to install the faster win95 desktop you will also need the following Win95 files, OR the
win95 CDROM so that 98lite can get them automatically.
EXPLORER.EXE
SHELL32.DLL
COMDLG32.DLL
These need to come from a 95 original, 95a, or 95b CDROM - 95c has IE4 integrated into it so files
from 95c version are not 100% compatible.
To install to a clean hard disk (recently formatted), you
will also need:
a. A Windows 98 Boot Disk
b. A Floppy disk containing the 98lite files that have been
unzipped from the distribution archive If you are installing over the top of your existing 98lite
setup then SKIP TO STEP 3
|
|
Step 1. Reboot your system using your Windows 98 Boot Disk
Step 2. Format the partition you will be installing Win98 to. Assuming, of course, you have BACKED UP any
needed DATA!
e.g. format C:\
Step 3. Make an empty "setup directory" on your hard disk e.g. MD C:\98SETUP
Step 4. Copy the 98lite files into this directory from the floppy disk. e.g. copy a:\*.* C:\98SETUP
Step 5. Switch to your Win98 setup directory, e.g. C: C:\98SETUP and run the 98lite.exe program.
e.g. 98lite
Step 6. Follow the directions, Sit back and enjoy the ride.
The install process should be automatic now - but just in case, 98lite should end up in a single directory on your
hard disk containing:
1. the Windows 98 Setup files (the contents of the "WIN98"directory on the CDROM WITHOUT the OLS, TOUR,
CONTENT, and CHANNELS folders)
2. the 98lite files: 98lite.exe 98logo.dat 98lite.lib
3. the Windows 95: Explorer.exe Shell32.dll Comdlg32.dll These need to come from a 95 original, 95a, or 95b
CDROM - 95c has IE4 integrated into it so files from 95c version are not 100% compatible.
These files should all be in a single "setup" directory. 98lite will make a "\98lite" subdir to store the win95 files
and any patched files after the first install so they should not need to be patched again. You can safely delete this
98lite subdirectory and all the files it contains. 98lite will make it again whenever you install the SLEEK
Windows95 desktop.
NOTES: For a faster setup - load himem.sys when you boot up. (a standard Windows boot disk does this for
you). Having Himem.sys loaded enables 98lite to load smartdrive which speeds up the extraction process more than 20x!!!! The
98lite setup will proceed slowly without Himem.sys but it will complete normally.
If you have previously installed Windows 98 using 98lite or if you have removed IE using IE-Remove, then you can simply
install this version over the top of your existing setup to gain the benefits of the new optional
components, while retaining your existing settings. After you have run one of 98lite's options for the first time,
98lite will enter itself in the ADD/REMOVE APPLICATIONS list in the Add\Remove applet of the control panel
and you can run 98lite from this link. This entry is not to uninstall 98lite,
but is located here so it doesnt clutter the start menu, and because you are adding and removing windows components using
98lite.
