As early as 1975,
Paolo Severin decided to form a musical group together with his two schoolmates
Osvaldo Guida and Silvano Rota: on a day of that year, under the walls
of what was then the Collegno Psychyatric Hospital, they gave birth to
the band whose name is now File Not Found. Some time later Paolo's brother,
Bruno, joined in at the bass guitar, and so did two friends of his: Fabrizio
Barbero at the guitar and Renato Cavallero, the singer, at the drums.
First they chose
the name of Nuova Formula, and with it they went as far as winning a contest
for beginners, a success which enabled them to make their first live experiences
with the help of Alex Grigiante, the sound engineer.
Following several
changes in the band composition and its sound, its members decided to substitute
the drum player Renato for more reliable electronic drums, while an old
friend of theirs, Fulvio Rocco, became the band's front man: on a hot summer
day in '85 a new band, christened File Not Found, came to stay.
The Files' genuine
rock, based on guitar, organ and drums, suddenly gave way, some years later,
to electronics and new wave, with a leading role played by drum machines,
sequencers and samplers. Yet, the Four being not too particular, fully
acoustic works were not in the least unbecoming for them.
From that moment
a great many concerts were held in the urban areas surrounding Turin, with
the band alternating covers and its own works in an ever growing interest
both from critics and the general public.
In the early
90's the band gave up making concerts, a tiring, stressing activity, and
devoted itself to the more balanced and relaxed sort of work that could
be made in their own recording studio. Sheltered by the quiet premises
of the Studio Iris they began to create and record their best works, running
the whole gamut of musical genres: soul, rock, pop, techno and, above all,
sweet melodies and New Romantic lyrics, making up the right mix for
a music never repeating itself.
Nearly all of
the File Not Found's lyrics are in English, and deal with personal life
experience or social issues: this is the period of troubled love stories
such as "Goodbye Girl", "And Now I Miss You", "Masha Pryor", as well as
"Polverina", a typical drug-addiction experience. But there are also nonsensical
songs of the kind of "C.C. Puskà " and "Roccolation", and more complex,
refined songs such as "The Second Door", "Water Mill" and "Milk for
the Cat", while "Deimos and Phobos"and "The Wisemen" are instrumental works.
The band, for lack of inspiration,
gets a
reflection break.
