Da sempre le leggi della Repubblica veneziana hanno vietato gli espatri dei vetrai muranesi, ma con risultati molte volte insoddisfacenti. Nei primi tempi si trattò di spostamenti in località vicine e per periodi limitati, spesso coincidenti con il periodo di sospensione annua dell'attività lavorativa. Ma quando, intorno alla metà del Quattrocento, a Murano si cominciò a produrre quel vetro così candido e terso da esser chiamato cristallo, gli stranieri cercarono di attirare i muranesi per carpirne i segreti e imitare la loro produzione. Non era facile, perché, oltre agli uomini, bisognava procurarsi anche materie prime uguali (o simili) a quelle usate a Murano. Nel '500 la Fiandra e l'Inghilterra riuscirono ad ottenere buoni prodotti "façon de Venise", che pare abbiano caratteristiche tali da poterli distinguere dagli oggetti importati da Venezia.
Alcuni storici stranieri hanno segnalato, in base alle carte locali, i nomi di alcuni vetrai muranesi giunti in quelle terre. Può essere interessante confrontarli con quelli forniti dai documenti conservati negli Archivi veneziani.
It is known that the stringent laws of the Venetian Republic did not allow glassmakers to leave Murano. But often these rules were disregarded. Indeed, some glassmakers moved, at first, to nearby places, particulary during the annula "vacation". By the middle of 15th century, when muranese glassmakers began to produce a colorless, higly transparent glass called "cristallo", foreign glass producers pursued to attract muranese glassmakers in order to wheedle their secrets and to imitate their artistic techniques. But, it was not an easy task, since alongside with the glassmakers the same raw materials used in Murano had to be profided. In the 16th century Flanders and England were able to obtain some good glass pieces "façon de Venise". Some foreign historians indicate, on the basis of local documents, the names of a few glassmakers who migrated in those countries from Murano. It may be very interesting to compare these documents with the ones preserved in the Venetian Archives.
