Ibuprofen (analgesic - antipyretic)Drug interactions
Interaction with aminoglycosides
Four cases of transient acute renal failure after concurrent administration of intravenous ibuprofen and aminoglycoside antibiotics (tobramicin; gentamicin) were described in an article appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine (1998). Patients were aged 2 - 16 years.
Aminoglycosides renal toxicity is potentiated by NSAIDs, because the later inhibit the production of renal vasodilating prostaglandins (PGE2) and prostacyclin.
