MAROGHINI
'Historian'
This is the type of artist I like. The musical traveller,
the musician who doesn't fear to experiment, well aware of the potential
of reggae music as an universal sound, capable of inglobing different
cultures and sounds.Maroghini, whose name means optical illusion, is a
multi-talented Jamaican recording and performing artist, vocalist, lyricist,
arranger, composer, actor and producer who has played and taught his
profession in over 40 countries as a master of the great art of African
and Indian drumming. This artiste (who speaks fluently 5 languages) has
become an autenthic glob-trotter of sound whose 'iter' has culminated into
this nice effort, 'Historian'. For these reasons, we could define his
music 'World Beat Reggae' or 'New Age Reggae' as it merges reggae with so
many differents sounds from all around the world. Maroghini's background
is solid reggae since his is an artist who skilfully handles
roots,
dancehall and dub styles as a competent producer. Moreover he is a
talented vocalist with a vocal style reminiscent of Freddie McGregor and
Luciano, who is able to create catchy and radio-friendly melodies . But,
as said, Maroghini is an able experimenter as shown in one of my favourite
tunes 'Manna tree' which showcases a captivating melody sung over an
infectuous oriental/egyptian/dancehall riddim. But Maroghini's imagination
has no limits as he mixes reggae troghout the album with different styles
as hip hop, hard rock or punk. The final result is always interesting. For
the realisation of this collection, Maro has collaborated with many
illustrious musicians as Robbie Shakespeare and the famous ragga dj Asher
D who appears in the final track, the dancehall/rai riddim driven 'Seven
Supreme'.
