Wild orchids of Italy 

Orchids (Orchidaceae family) represent the most numerous Family of the flowering plants (Angiospermae), with over 24,000 species worldwide. It is not true that they are just jungle plants. This fallacy has contributed to the conception that orchids are rare. Although most of them are in tropical zones, orchids grow naturally in most parts of the world except very cold climates. Italy, due to its favourable geographic position and habitat richness, is the first in Europe for the number of species, with about 120 species of wild orchids. All Italian species are terrestrial. The flowering period range from April to July,depending on species and altitude. So you can understand why several Italian Nature photographers become crazy in spring! They wake-up before sunrise and drive to locations where orchids can be found and photographed with the best light of early morning ...
