My Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard is a Cadian infantry regiment with a good number of vehicles to bolster them. I was hoping in a Cadian look in Epic too, sadly GW flavoured Valhallan and Catachan look. I don't like it but it is the only way to field an Imperial Guard Army unless I can find some old IG boxes/ sprues/ loosed miniature ! If you have old IG miniatures, please, write me I'll buy or barter them !! Thank you !!!

As previously said, the Imperial Guard Detachment boxed set contains:

10 Catachan Jungle Fighters
24 Ice Warriors of Valhalla
1 Commissar
5 Ratling Snipers
5 Ogryns
6 Rough Riders
8 Valahallan autocannons
8 loader
6 Valhallan Missile Launch.
2 Valhallan commlinks
2 Valhallan officers
1 Psyker

XXVI Valhallan Regiment from 3 IG boxes set !

In the back cover of this boxed set Gw writes that it contains 2 Rough Riders Squad, 1 Ogryn Squad, 1 Ratling snipers Squad, 1 Catachan Jungle Fighters squad, 2 Ice Warriors of Valhalla squad, 4 Ice warriors of Valahalla heavy weapons and 6 charachters.
I was searching those information on the GW's web site before ordering three boxed set... with the new Epic 40.000 rules IG must field a lot of command squad, so I was worried about the number of officiers models included in a box. Unfortunately information was very incomplete !!

In my humble opinion the characters in the box are only 4 (1 Commissar, 2 Colonel and 1 Psyker). It is hard to call "character" a simple guardsman with a commlink !!
This is the GW's layout for an Ice Warriors of Valhalla command squad

What you can do with this box... or How many boxes do you really need ?

By the E40k Armies Book IG must field a command squad every 3 infantry squads and can field up to 3 command squad in a detachment. So it is clear that a single box is not enough for an actual IG detachment. I think that 3 boxes are the best way to build your detachments. If you buy 3 boxes you can easily fix the problem related to the sprue's compostition. With three boxes and some wise considerations you have enough miniature's assortment to field 2 Valhallan detachment with 6 command squads, and a mixed Catachan/Rough Riders light detachment.

Gw suggest several base's compositions, as you can see in this pictures... I think, however, that there is a more efficient and economic layout for the Imperial Guard infantry bases, let's start with my Optional Basing System (!!!)

1) Rough Riders - I base 2 riders only on a new base or on old square base (20mm x 20mm). In this way a single box let you form 3 bases i.e. with 3 boxes you have 9 bases. They can be structured in a single detachment with 3 RR cmd squad and 6 RR squad. It can be considered a light brigade.... !!
2) Heavy Weapons - in a box you find 8 wheeled autocannons, 8 loaders kneeled and 6 missile launcher teams. last one is a strange bit... there are a firer and a loader in a single miniature ! It is a pity because if you mount 2 missile launcher teams in a single base it looks very bare ! I mount Hw squad in two different manner: 2 autocannons or 1 autocannon and 1 missile launcher teams. In the first way the base looks like the picture, but I replace the missile launcher with a spare guardsman or leave the hole empty covered with filler or with a small ammunition crate (I'm making a little mortar to use the autocannon's loader as mortar crew, it looks good in the center hole !!). In the other way I mount one missile launcher team in the second hole and an autocannon team in the the fourth and fifth hole. In this mode I create 7 HW bases from a single box (6 base with autocannon, loader and missile launcher, 1 base with 2 autocannons); with 3 boxes I have 21 heavy weapons squads splitted in two detachments.(XXVI Valhallan Regiment)

3) Catachan Jungle Fighters - The first problem of this boxed set is, in my opinion, the lack of officiers. Moreover those poor Catachan Jungle fighters are left alone, without officiers and heavy weapons !! Doubtless a poor infantryman's nightmare !! With a single box you can only base them as 2 units and use them as a single Tactical squad. I'll try to convert some Catachans into heavy weapons crew... but it will be a hard task !! I based a Catachans Command Squad with 4 Jungle Fighters, a Commissar and a flagpole !!! So, with 3 boxes I'll field a Catachan Command Squad, 2 Catachan Tactical Squad and a Catachan Heavy Weapons Squad as backbone of the third detachment (XXVI Valhallan Regiment).

4) Valhallan Command Squad - I don't need (and I don't have) a psyker for every command squad, so I based 3 guardsmen, 1 commlink operator and an Officier or 2 guardsmen, 1 commlink operator, 1 Psyker and an Officier.

5) Valhallan Veteran Squad - I used 1 Commissar to lead the Catachans units so I have 2 Commissar left. I have also 9 Valhallan guardsmen left... I field them as two "veteran" tactical units in the second detachment respectively 1 Commissar and 4 guardsmen and 1 Commissar and 3 guardsmen.

6) Last minute conversions - I'm basing my new Imperial Guard and I was looking at the loader kneeled. He carries a large shell. That shell looks more like a mortar shell than an autocannon ammunition clip (at least relating to Warhammer 40k specimen). So I constructed a mortar with... a piece of spaghetto !!! I don't know about availability of pasta in other countries, but little piece of spaghetti makes a very good mortar. As soon as possible I'll scan a picture of this new IG heavy weapon !!! Cut a piece of spaghetto of about 7 mm with a proper angle of cut and glue it to a base amid two holes. Put the mortar loader on the left holes et voila' ! Instant IG mortar ! If you can't find spaghetti maybe you can use an electric wire or something else... a spaghetto is plus or minus like the gun of the wheeled autocannon of the same boxed set.

Hope this can help !

All right !!! These are my suggestions about using wisely this new boxed set !
