Traveling early in the morning along the main 121 road, 10 kilometers
from Nissoria, the dawn offers a unique spectacle: The lights from the
town stand out in the sky which is not yet illuminated, while the sunrise
tinges everything red and reveals the shape of Etna. This is Agira,
the native place of Diodoro Siculo, the first historian who undertook
a universal historiography. But it also the town of St. Philip the Syrian,
who did not fear fighting the devil here. It is also the town of myths:
Here Hercules undertook one of his famous trials by drying up a small
lake at the foot of the town. Today it is a historical town as ca be
seen from its beautiful churches: San Filippo, Santa Margherita, San
Antonio of Padova, Most Holy Saviour and Santa Maria Maggiore. Above
it all stands out the Norman castle, from where you can enjoy a view
which, rotating at 360 degrees, extends far and wide across the entire
province of Enna, toward the plain of Catania, the high peak of the
Nebrodi, the Erei and the distant Madonie Mountains.

121, dieci chilometri dopo Nissoria, l'alba offre uno spettacolo unico:
le luci di un paese non ancora illuminato mentre il sole, al suo sorgere,
tinge tutto di rosso e svela la sagoma dell'Etna. Questo è Agira, il
paese natio di Diodoro Siculo, lo storico che per primo si volle cimentare
con una storiografia universale: Ma è anche il paese di San Filippo
il Siriano, che da queste parti non disdegnava di litigare con il diavolo.
Ma è anche il paese dei miti: qui Ercole affrontò una delle sue famose
fatiche prosciugando un piccolo lago ai piedi del paese. Oggi è il paese
della storia, leggibile nelle sue belle chiese: San Filippo, Santa Margherita,
Sant'Antonio di Padova, SS. Salvatore e Santa Maria Maggiore. Su tutto
si erge il Castello Normanno, da cui si può godere di una vista che
rotando a 360 gradi, percorre in lungo e in largo l'intera provincia
di Enna, guardando la piana di Catania, le alte vette dei Nebrodi, gli
Erei e le lontane Madonne.
