CALATAFIMI
This large country town in the upper Val di Mazara was founded before
the Roman conquest, and developed during the Arab period around a fortress
which gave its name to the locality. A feudal possession during the
Middle Ages, it became famous during Garibaldi's Sicilian campaign,
when an epic battle, decisive for the capture of Palermo, took place
there (l5th May 1860). The remains of the Castle (thirteenth century)
are interesting, as are some Baroque churches. An Ossuary Monument recalls
the battle between Garibaldi and the Bourbons. But the most important
sight-seeing place in this area is undoubtedly ancient Segesta.
