Casalvecchio Siculo, situated on Peloritani Mountains on the slopes
of S. Elia Mount, must have been a pla ce of ancient settlement, as
the presence of old palaces, ancient churches and monasteries, show
us. The name Casalvecchio has a Saracen origin "Calabieth" and a Greek
one "Palachorion" which means "old hut". The village was, for six centuries
under the domination of the noblemen of Savoca until 1793 when it obtained
its independence. St. Peter and St. Paul's church is situated on a valley
of river Agrò; its architecture is quite complex and refined. It was
built in 1172 by Ruggero III. This church links together three different
styles : Byzantine, Arabic and Norman. Nowadays Casalvecchio has got
a little museum where ancient and holy decorations of the 18th and 19th
centuries are kept.
Casalvecchio
Il comune di Casalvecchio situato alle pendici del monte Sant'Elia,
dovette essere luogo di antichi insediamenti, come testimonia la presenza
di vecchi palazzi, chiese e monasteri. Il nome "Casalvecchio" ha un'origine
saracena "Calabieth" ed un'altra greca "Palachorion", composta da "Palaion"
(Vecchio) e "Corion" (casale) cioè "Casale Vecchio". Il paese fu per
secoli sotto la denominazione dei signori di Savoca fino a quando, nel
1793, ottenne la separazione. Tra le ricche testimonianze storiche motivo
di orgoglio è il Tempio dei S.S. Pietro e Paolo, realizzato dai frati
Brasiliani attorno al 560 e ricostruito nel 1172 dal conte Ruggero II.
In questo monumento si fondano in perfetta sintonia tre stili bizantino,
arabo, normanno. Casalvecchio oggi possiede anche un Minimuseo dove
si conservano attrezzi da lavoro e ornamenti sacri del XVIII e XIX sec.
