CASTELLAMMARE
DEL GOLFO
A pretty bathing centre in the middle of the gulf of the same name,
with a distinctive setting and views. In ancient times it was probably
Segesta's outlet to the sea; in the Middle Ages it belonged to Alcamo
and was known as Porto d'Alcamo. The Castle, built in the fourteenth
century, was considerably altered at a later date. Nearby, at Terme
Segestane, is a hot salt and sulphur spring, of which the mud and vapours
are also used, and which is particularly recommended for arthropathies,
arthritis and neuritis, rheumatism, skin complaints, metabolic diseases
and problems of the respiratory tract. West of Castellammare, along
the picturesque coast of Scopello, we see the ànposing shapes of the
Faraglioni rocks rise from the sea, creating an exceptionally striking
landscape.
