Chapter: Defense against Side Control
Move: Defense against a headlock

First, with any headlock escape on the ground, you have to be on your side to start the escape. You must learn to see the attack coming and get to your side before your opponent has settled into the hold.
To begin, place your forearm across his throat as shown. Be sure to have your other arm tight to your side.
Then, your other hand grabs your "framing" wrist to make a nice, safe frame so that he cannot drive any more of his weight onto you.
Next, slide your hips far away from him as shown in this picture.
Now that you have taken his back support away, start to push him with your framed arms in the same direction as you slid your hips.
Now throw your leg over his head as shown to attempt the finish. If he lets go of the headlock...
Grab his pant leg or knee to hold his top leg down.
Now place your other hand on his head.
...Simply scissor your legs around his neck and squeeze while keeping his arm trapped so he cannot roll away. He should be tapping soon.
If he does NOT let go of the headlock, (you want to figure this out as you are pushing him back and beginning to throw the leg over), use the momentum of him falling back and put your elbow or hand down on the ground behind him to help yourself....
....get to the position shown in this picture. Be sure to be patient during the next few moves...If you go too fast, you will lose your position.
Now throw your leg over his body and place your heel right against his hip. Your foot wants to be flat on the ground. Notice my weight is more on my back foot and not way over his body. This is to stop him from rolling me over him.
To begin the finish, place the blade of your forearm across his neck and make a frame with your other hand as you previously did to begin your escape. If he starts to flail around, just put your hands on the ground and re-establish your position.
Downward pressure on his neck and leaning your body toward the top of his head will release the headlock. Make sure to use both. The second he lets go, take your hand and help trap it against your shoulder along with your head as shown.
You are now set up for an Arm lock. Note: These two moves only demonstrate two ways to get out. There are a plethora of moves that you could use to escape. Unfortunately, the page would take a month to load if I put them all here at once. Enjoy!
