Chapter 1

There's a bit of a play on words when Genrou first sees the tessen in action. "Hi" is both a squeal as well as a word for fire.

Chapter 2

Daruma - the following picture and explanation came from a Kinokuniya ad found in an issue of Mangajin.

"The Daruma Doll is a Japanese good luck symbol, bottom-weighted to always land feet first. To make a wish you paint in one of the eyes. When the wish comes true you gratefully paint in the other eye."

"Pachi pachi punch" is a Yoshimoto gag used by Shimaki Jouji. "Pachi pachi" is the sound effect produced from beating your hands against your chest.

The 7 lines Kouji is referring to are the 7 lines his speech to Genrou took up on the page of the novel.

"Excuse me, sorry we're late." - "Gomen yashite okure yashite gomen yasu" comes from the Yoshimoto gag "Gomen yashite okure yashite gomen yasha" used by Suenari Yumi. According to Annie-san, it seems to be a play on words between "Gomen yashite okure yasu" (Excuse me) and "Okurete gomen yasu" (I'm sorry to be late) According to Kinugawa-san, it means "Suenari Yumi has arrived. Please give me a laugh now." ^v^

Chapter 3

Buta=pig/pork Man is short for manjuu Manjuu is a kind of dumpling.

"Scuse me" - "Gomen kusai" is a Yoshimoto gag used by Charlie Hama. It's shorten from "Gomen kudasai" (Excuse me). "Kusai" means "smelly"

"How should I deal with you 2?" also means "How should I cook you 2?"

Aibou= partner, Ai=beloved, bou=stick/pole

"Engo o yousei"="request our backing"
"Go en no yousei"="5 yen elf"

"Kyuuen no irai"="a reinforcement request"
"Kyuu en no iraira"="9 yen irritation"

Chapter 7

"Sainara sainara sainara" was a catch phrase of Yodogawa Nagaharu who introduced movies shown on TV and would end each program with the phrase.

Chapter 8

Dokuro=Skull

Rokurokubi=long-necked monster
