FLAG CAPTURED IN 1899
The flag has written along the white border
"Los insurrectos, Negros PI 1899".
Period ink, silk material.
With the Spanish writing it could have probably been
taken by Spanish soldier around the time when they
lose control of the islands to the Americans and then
taken by American soldier .
The stars and the sun are in gold , the sun has eyes , nouse and mouth depicted on it. |

Filipino flag captured at Vigan, Northern Luzon, Philippines. by Lt. Col. Webb C. Hayes, 31st Infantry Division, December 5, 1899. ; the area that now is yellow was red at one time. If the red section was on top when the flag was raised, it signified the country was at war. If the blue was on top, it signified the country was at peace.
Tricolor flag (white, yellow and dark blue); white triangular section on left side (facing) is white and is attached to a reed slat; sewn to the white cotton are 5 tufts of silver wire/shredded material: 1 on each end of reed slat and 3 in white triangle; same silver material; frames a picture of a face sketched on flag; top half of flag is made of yellow material sewn to white triangle and sewn to lower dark blue material (wool) which forms bottom half of flag. |

Philippine flag brought back to America by Webb C. Hayes. The original colors of flag are: triangle - white, red on top and blue at the bottom.
The blue and the red stripes are now discolored and become green (blue ) and pink (red ).
Here the decription of the flag:
Green and pink flag, shimmery material, with colors meeting in the middle with a horizontal line of cream colored stitching. Green on bottom, pink on top, On left end is triangle with point into flag, all cream colored shredded material, left of that is a cream colored strip with long string at bottom and loop at top.
The measures of the flag are : 10.433 x 17.283 inches .
This and the other flag with yellow stripe are at present in the collections of The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, Ohio, U.S.A. |
