Casella di testo: This little hill is completely artificial, formed between the 13th century B.C. and the 9th century A.D. at least. Its position between two inlets was recognized from the earliest times as asset both for defence and for sheltering and loading of ships. Looking toward Monopoli one sees the so called “muraglione”, the preserved section of the ancient walls. On top of the acropolis one can see the foundations of a temple of the Hellenistic period ,while on the side of the facing inland, there are the remains of fortification later periods.
Casella di testo: This urban stretch of the great Via Traiana. is paved with polygonal blocks of limestone, and has curbing stones of the same material. Deep wheelruts attest to the volume over the centuries.
Casella di testo: This part of necropolis was in use from the middle of the 4th century B.C. The area  had previously been used as a quarry. The Messapian tombs are usually pi-tombs (pseudo-sarcophagus), though these are mixed in with chamber and semi-chamber tombs, which are was often pastered and painted. In the 1st century A.D. the area was used for cremation burials, while the remaining free areas were used in the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. for further inhumations.
