HISTORIA E INFORMACION

ternet.

HISTORY AND INFORMATION

Dinky Toys were born in 1933, in England.
Initially called Modelled Miniatures because were accesories for miniature railroad platforms for the model trains manufactured by Frank Hornby. There were two factories; one in Binns Road, Liverpool, England other in Bobigny, France.
All the universe of models of DINKY TOYS covered miniature reproductions as people, buildings, trees, signals, military equipment, airplanes, vessels and vehicles in general.
British production started in 1933 and finished between 1964 when Meccano Limited was taked over by different owner.

Stages

Collection would be focused into two different stages. Pre and Post War.
First between 1933 up to 1940 and second initiated on Christmas of 1945 up to 1964.
The variety of models reach than 1000 different types.
Several considerations must be taken into accountby collectors. For example the packaging boxes, the physical aspect of the models itself most of them mutating within all their life span. Manufacturing materials used were changed through the years, the numbering system, the scales and the colours.
Another detail is the thickness of the axles. In prewar was 0.062 meanwhile after was 0.078.

Changes

No way to citate all the changes happened on each of models. Even though this fact it is important to mention of most important
The first in 1946. Wheels plain cast wheel hubs and rubber tires until then. Dinky Toys now lukes cast hubs with a raised central section.
Meanwhile in france shortage of rubber compelled to produce onepiece all metal wheels (including tires) for a time.
There is no an exact date for changes since this happened through the time once finishing existing stocks.
The first Dinky Supertoys were issued in 1947. These models of large vehicles had their own type of diecast wheel hubs, with a partly concave pattern, and treaded rubber tires.
Until this point, all Dinky tires had been slick, but in the next few years a variety of treaded rubber tires came into being for cars and commercial vehicles alike.
Between 1933 to 1939 some trucks have 4 types of chassis, cast radiators instead of silver plated ones, step wheel on wings was moved, rear windows in vans were closed after war, there were different casts of advertising on trucks, first models alloy were cast and lead later on an alloy with more lead, original wheels on full metal, there were 4 types of truck 25 series, some van and buses as 34b first series with open window last closed, bus, same as for 29b bus. Later on in forties Double decker buses series 29c/290 had three different radiators, Foden lorries first 500 series moved for 900 secon type radiator, Guy lorries moved front from 500 serie to 900 one. In 1956, Corgi Toys came equipped with clear plastic windows, which appeared in Dinky Toys in 1958. Suspension started in 1959, fingertip steering in 1960, and a wealth of moving and detailed parts in the Sixties.

System of Catalogue Numbers

We cannot avoid to mentionate the changes occurred in the Systems of Catalogue Numbers.
As an example codes for 28 series of delivery vans, with no letters, moved to three digit (in this case 280) and first Dinky Supertoys started as 500 series numbers.
British Dinky Toys changed to a three digit numeral system in 1954, French Dinky Toys changed to a similar all numeral system during 1959. The 500 and 800 numbers were reserved for the French models, and the British system was prepared for this change a few years earlier, when the 500 series of Supertoys was renumbered with new 900 catalog numbers.
The British number change at 1954/56. The 500 series moved to 900 a year later, and some were shifted to 400 series. For this reason the British Dinky catalog in 1954 gave both numbers. Numbering systems adopted was; 100's for cars, 200 to 249 for racing and sports cars 250 to 299 public service vehicles (buses, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, road rollers, garbage trucks, etc.), 300's agricultural vehicles; 400's light and medium trucks; 600's military vehicles; 700's aircraft and accessories; 900 for Supertoys, including a few aircraft. The French Dinky 500 numbers were used for cars and small trucks, with military vehicles, aircraft, Supertoys and accessories in the 800 series.

Colours

Several changes in tone of colours were after 1940 specially in the line of trucks as Guys Lorries, Fodens and others. On the year 1956 there were many changes as bright two tone color schemes for cars.

Scales

Dinky Toys have tended to be inccurate. In 1957 the first Dublo Dinky Toys appeared, intended (as the "Dublo" name implies) for use on 00 gauge railroad platforms. Though a few small scale models had been produced since the Thirties, most Dinky Toys had been built more or less to 0 gauge. (I.e. some of the lorries looks far too small against ¨0¨): 1/ 43 to 1/ 48 scale, with larger vehicles generally made to a slightly smaller scale so as not to look excessively big beside models of smaller vehicles.
The Dublo series never really caught on and was withdrawn after a few years, leaving that field to Matchbox and other firms for the time being, while Dinky and Corgi competed for dominance in the 0 gauge area.
In 1963 the British branch of Dinky Toys was bought by the Tri Ang firm. Same year the first antique car, a Model T Ford, were issued.
Dinky Toys were expanding the production. In 1965 six American cars were made in Hong Kong and another range, the small scale Mini Dinky Toys, appeared in 1968. During this age Dinky and Corgi began to make to a larger scale 1/35, instead of 1/43. Mattel Hot Wheels in 1967 wrote the book on wheels. Later on Dinky Toys developed the same type of wheels

Restoration

Many of us enjoyed having Dinky Toys when we were kids.
So much so that we never considered that future collectors would want us to keep them in boxes in a bank vault so that they would remain 'Mint/Boxed' when we had grown out of them!
The truth of the matter is that the 'played-with' Dinkies are the ones with history.
It is these toys which gave so much enjoyment. So these Dinkys are which need to be restored. If you are planning to sell them in the way they are ´played-with' the collectors did not value them.
You can look for a restorer in your country or send them to any specialized experts. I can citate Aaron Dinky Recoveries in England or The Maestro in Holland both are on Internet.

STORIA E INFORMAZIONE

Ruote e pneumatici.
