In this page I will collect some soundfonts that, in my opinion, are the best. All opinions expressed are, of course, personal, they are not meant to be taken as absolute truths. The soundfonts in here are all believed to be public domain as they can be found on the Net for free; if it's not so, if you believe that a soundfont belongs to you and you didn't allow its free distribution email me and I'll have it immediately removed. All downloadable soundfonts are compressed using SFPack or sfArk.
Pianissimum (packed 2.06 MB; unpacked 6.66 MB) Programmed by Francois Gaton-Andre'/Alex Nicolas. It's the best piano I've found so far; good samples, well done multilayers, quite a bright sound. Its only fault IMO is a release time that is too long when a note is played without sustain. Vote 8.
Hubbe VeloPiano (Generic) v2.0 (packed 2.05 MB; unpacked 5.53 MB) Programmed by Winfried Hubbe. IMO the best of the three Velo Pianos made by the author, features a very versatile timbre suitable for a wide variety of situations; the noticeable number of samples used together with a better use of loops made this version 2.0 sound better than its predecessor while reducing the requested memory amount by 1/3. Vote 7.5.
TRB 62 (packed 1 MB; unpacked 2.71 MB) Programmed by Theo Mitrentsis. Electric bass sampled from a fretted Yamaha TRB six strings. Good sound, best suitable for pop/rock has its weak point in the fact that only the six open strings have been sampled and this makes certain riffs less incisive. Vote 7.
Fingerbass 1 (packed 29.1 KB; unpacked 63.4 KB) Programmed by EMU. Despite its small size it's a good bass, yes it won't be like Patitucci's yet in most cases it was more effective in the mix than much "heavier" basses. Vote 6.5.
MM Big Pads Demo (packed 2.55 MB; unpacked 3.54 MB) Programmed by Melody Machine. A demo pad bank from the CDROM of the same name sold by Melody Machine. One word: fantastic!! The sounds are very well programmed and will make new age and soundtrack composers happy. They remind me of the legendary Wavestation's pads. Vote 8.5.
MicroWave XT Pads (packed 1.01 MB; unpacked 1.82 MB) Programmed by Alex Nicolas. As the name suggests, these are pads sampled from the well known Waldorf synth. Mostly they are analog flavoured timbres suitable for new age and electronic music in general however they very well programmed. Vote 7.
Real Acoustic Drums EXTRA (packed 1.96 MB; unpacked 4.39 MB) Programmed by Guido Scognamiglio. Definitely one of the best drumkits I've ever heard! Great sounds (toms are FANTASTIC) and multilayers, it can be played confortably from a keyboard thanks to the "almost" GM standard and the accurate velocity responses. If I wanted to find a fault I'd say that the mix between certain sounds it's not exactly my taste... Vote 8.5.
Tama RockStar (packed 2.15 MB; unpacked 4.69 MB) Programmed by Guido Scognamiglio. Yet another great drumkit from good ol' Guido that never lets anyone down...some of the samples (rides, crashes) are similar to the Real Acoustic Drums EXTRA ones, others (snare, kick, toms, hihats) were changed. I think the drumset is better mixed but the kick (that by itself is great) has got a fastidious hihat sound together with the kick...it's a REAL pity! Vote 7.5.
Hammond B3 enh (packed 955 KB; unpacked 2.87 MB) Programmed by unknown/Georgy Sedov. A good Hammond organ slightly overdriven with fast and slow Leslie versions. With a sf 2.1 supporting soundcard (such as the EMU APS) mod wheel crossfades between slow and fast Leslie. Vote 7.
B3 (packed 239 KB; unpacked 440 KB) Programmed by unknown. Decent B3, small size with fast and slow Leslie version. With a sf 2.1 supporting soundcard (such as the EMU APS) mod wheel crossfades between slow and fast Leslie. Vote 6.
