Though Leslie Legacy Association hasn't organized any formal memorial event in Hong Kong this year, a small crowd of fans still joined us spontaneously at the podium outside the Jardine House, Central (opposite to the Mandarin Hotel) before 6:41pm to remember our dearest Leslie in group.  Since there wasn't any formal program, for us it's been ever more meaningful to put our hearts and candles together for Leslie, at the time when he needed us most four years ago. Picture by Associated Press on Yahoo!News website. 'A Time To Remember' director Mr. Ye Da Ying remembers Leslie on his personal blog today. He wrote: "... 'If I can't live with dignity, I would rather die! Death is like going home. That building was very high, she remained in the air for a very long time, seemed like flying in the sky'. Whenever I think about 'Red Lover' Leslie Cheung's lines, my heart thumps. I am not superstitious, but this time it's very difficult not to make one kind of imagination. I also found some pictures, let us fondly remember him together!" Leslie Cheung On Homosexuality - Today is April Fool's Day. Four years ago, on April Fool's Day, Leslie Cheung used his life to play a grim joke on all of us.  Recalling this day still fills us with a sad regret. Two weeks ago, Joint Publishing (Hong Kong) Company Limited released a publication titled 'Literature and Images Over Time'. Editor Xiao Si included in the contents of the book remarks made by Leslie Cheung during his lifetime. This came about seven years ago when teacher Xiao Si opened a literary topic at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for students to explore the complex relationship between literary words and images. She invited Leslie Cheung, Anne Hui and Virginia Ng as guest speakers. It took her a while to compile the transcript but after a long delay this was finally published. In the book, Leslie Cheung gave us some insight into his acting experience. "Among the roles that I have acted in, I personally like the role of 'Master Twelve' in 'Rouge'.  I could feel the value and importance that director Stanley Kwan has towards me. Basically I feel that Master Twelve is a 'sex maniac' as well as a 'daredevil'. It is a challenging role because this character has a great sexual and love tension inside him." "I liberated myself when I accepted the filming of 'Farewell My Concubine'.  During the filming process, my portrayal has to balance the director's evasive approach to the theme of homosexuality; I can only act to the best of my ability. I believe that if the film 'Farewell My Concubine' can remain in its originality with more emphasis focused on the drama of homosexual love, the status of this film would definitely be comparatively higher than other films of similar theme such as one of my latter works, 'Happy Together'." Newspapers and websites coverage of April 1st and of activities held in Hong Kong and Cina by Red Mission, Leslie Legacy Association and others on TakungPao, WenWei Po 1 - 2, AppleDaily on LeslieTong.com, MingPao Daily, SingPao, SingTao, The Sun, Oriental Daily, Tungstar 1 - 2, Ent.Sina, RedForum. The Sun and Oriental Daily covered also Leslie Legacy Association candlelight vigil!. Fans brought flowers to Madame Tussaud's museum and to Leslie's house. Newpapers reported that Florence Chan with her son, Suzi Wong, Elisa Chan and Kenneth among others paid a visit to Mr. Tong in his home. Jacky Cheung in his concert paid homage to Leslie. More pictures of LLA candlelight event soon.

On the evening of 1 April at 6.41 pm, about fifty fans representing Leslie Legacy Association gathered at the Podium outside Jardine House, Central (opposite to the Mandarin Hotel) to light candles and remember Leslie Cheung. Fans used white roses to form his name, 'Leslie' and lit up his name with candles. After paying a minute of silent tribute, the fans raised their voices to sing some of Leslie Cheung's classic hits. Then Hon Yeung led the group to sing the song, 'Gor Gor' bringing the evening's candlelight vigil to a close. A spokesperson expressed, "We did not promote this event; the number of participants may be small but remembering Gor Gor in our hearts is enough." Oriental Daily newspaper also reported that there were two strange incidents happened on that evening. Apparently all of a sudden there was a strong gush of wind that blew out most of the candles. The fans that were there had to form a circle to form a windbreaker so that the candles could stay lit. After this, the girls could not start the music system to play Leslie's songs.  It just refused to work so in the end, they had to sing the songs on their own. Our Leslie wanted we feel his presence and definitely wanted to listen to our voice singing his songs!!! Source: Oriental Daily on LeslieTong.com and RedForum, kindly translated by Simie. 'Collective Memories of Leslie Cheung - the works of 1970s-200s' by RTHK DVD set can be ordered on YesAsia and HMV in different versions. At this moment the DVD set is No. 1 in HMV DVD chart. YesAsia wrote: as his continued popularity four years after his tragic death proves, Leslie Cheung is one of the few stars to truly achieve immortality. Equally loved as an actor and singer, he starred in many of the iconic films in Hong Kong cinema and released a staggering list of bestselling hit songs. Just as important in our collective memory of this legendary star are some high quality TV dramas he made for Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the city's public broadcasting agency. The last title he made for RTHK, probably the most significant one in this boxset, is his only directorial piece. From Ashes to Ashes (2002), a film he made for the Hong Kong government to promote anti-smoking, stars Anita Mui who also passed away in 2003, plus other famous stars like Karen Mok, Joey Yung, Leehom Wang, Teresa Mo, Edison Chen, and Gigi Leung. The other five featurettes, all made in the late 1970s to early 1980s, include Teenagers (1978) and Dead Knot (1980) from the acclaimed Under The Same Roof series, plus Woman at 33 (1983) in which he stars alongside Cheng Pei Pei, who shares her comments on Leslie Cheung in an interview included with this boxset. The remaining two titles are Heritage: The Young Concubine (1980), which touches on the controversial topic of incest, and youth drama City of Sand (1981). The boxset also comes with an interview with Leslie Cheung about his first directorial experience, footage from the Gala Premiere of From Ashes to Ashes, and a photo gallery. Revisit Leslie Cheung's charismatic performances!

This will cover the question on why people of different races have become his fans and why some of them still hold a lasting affection for him for over two decades. Interview with writer/director Chen Kaige - source http://rossanthony.com/interviews/chenkaige.shtml
Press: Talk about Lesley (i.e.Leslie).
Chen: My wife and I where in Hong Kong before the New Year, we tried to find him by making several phone calls, eventually we were told he wasn't in a very good mood. Sort of depressed. I don't know why. Somebody said that he was haunted by the ghost of the last film. I'm not so sure it's right. We were in Beijing when our friend calls from Hong Kong... We were very very shocked we didn't want to believe this was true. Because we did want him to play a part in our next project. How sad it is. I wrote an article to give to the Chinese film magazine. He was just like that... very emotional. Very sensitive. The first reaction from me was that he really turned himself into the character that he played in 'Farewell My Concubine'.

'Farewell My Concubine' reviewed by Mark Adnum
The epitome of the sumptuous films that came out of China and Hong Kong in the early nineties, 'Farewell My Concubine' is one of the richest and most well-made gay films. It's also certainly the most epic, a grand-scale story of personal and national history filmed on location and told with a cast of elaborately costumed thousands. The film now takes on an extra dimension, an eerie and prismic sixth-sense, with the suicide in 2003 of star Leslie Cheung, who in this film played a tormented and suicidal actor who has trouble distinguishing between his realities and his most famous role – the tormented adorer of an indifferent man who takes his own life.
Cheung plays Dieyi, flamboyant star of the Beijing Opera. He and his co-star Duan Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) have been friends since youth, when both endured the rigour of Opera training. Dieyi plays the female role in one of the most popular operas – about a lovestruck concubine waiting for her King to arrive back from war. In this role-within-a-role, Cheung is awesome, clad in bejeweled yellow costumes and moving grandly about the stage, reveling in his fame and his opportunity to act out real-life his unrequited love for his old, straight friend. The superstar pair live like royalty, surrounded with prostitutes, opium and an entourage of hangers-on. Tension arrives with Juxian (Gong Li) a fiery and beautiful prostitute who Xiaolou falls in love with, then marries. As Dieyi manoeuvres around his jealousy of Juxian and develops a serious opium habit, Chinese history starts to suck everything into its powerful gravity, and the Communists take over, sending indulgent lifestyles flying and artists and intellectuals to prison.
Epic films risk coldness, and can drown in their own size (see: 'The Last Emperor', 'Gandhi' etc) but the grand romance and seething subplots of personal jealousy and unrequited love ground 'Farewell My Concubine' and give it warmth, accessibility and storytelling intelligence. Only nearer the end does the tide of history threaten to swamp the story, with the descent from fiery revolution into drab communist daily life the only unsatisfying and least coherent part of the film. Plot points like Juxian’s pregnancy, or Dieyi’s fall into opium addiction and semi-prostitution, are far more compelling – the historical epic here sits well in the background for the most part. At all times, we’re treated to gorgeous music, detailed sets evoking pre- and post-revolutionary China, and the lusty performances of the three leads.
Cheung is the highlight, though, his deliciously grand Dieyi ignoring anything and everything that doesn’t kow-tow to his starring role.

Suzi Wong sharing her experience on quitting smoking.  She had been smoking for 27 years but when she celebrated her birthday in year 2000, she decided to quit smoking.  Being a chain smoker, she was most reluctant to give up her love for cigarettes that on the eve of her birthday she was still dearly holding onto a cigarette until Leslie said to her, "Why the devil do you smoke?"  Leslie grasped her hand and snubbed out the cigarette.  At that point, she was determined to give up the smoking habit. Suzi Wong said that since she stopped smoking, her complexion and her appetite had improved considerably compared to her smoking days. 1997, Before and After: Commemorating Ten Years of Reunification
Before we know it, it's been ten years. Even today, the notion of "1997" is still pregnant with meaning, denoting a lot more than just a year. In the twenty-odd years since the early 1980's, when China and Britain began their negotiations, Hong Kong had experienced the historical moment of transitioning from colony to Special Administrative Region. Its cinema had also gone through the eventful development from boom to bust. The social and political happenings before and after 1997 had in fact inspired a generation of filmmakers, leading to the Golden Age that was 1980s and 1990s Hong Kong cinema. To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Reunification, the Hong Kong Film Archive is presenting the program "1997, Before and After" to give the audience a chance to contemplate the meaning of the Reunification. Admissions to screenings are free of charge, followed by discussions to be hosted by figures in culture and politics where audience members are encouraged to openly speak their mind about the last ten years. Two seminars will be held in August, one conducted in Cantonese and one in English. "1997, Before and After" is jointly curated by the Hong Kong Film Archive and Evans Chan, with the assistance of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Among the ten movies chosen by Hong Kong Film Archive Stanley Kwan's "Rouge" will be screened on July 7, 2007 at 7:00 pm at the Hong Kong Film Archive Cinema. Discussion Host: Fung Ka-ming (Film Critic)
"Rouge" on Hong Kong Film Archive:
A beautiful ghost returns to Hong Kong 50 years after her death, searching for a promise. But both the city and its way of life had changed beyond recognition. Half a century is a very long time, especially during a stretch of time when history was going through transformations at a tremendous clip. The film also bears witness to the iconic presence of Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, stars who were at the prime of their screen effervescence in 1987 but whose deaths, both in 2003, were two of the most heart-wrenching moments for Hong Kong in the last decade, marking in fact the passing of an era.

The following passage was extracted from the local Chinese newspaper in Toronto, June 16, 2007 issue of the Today Daily News. Its topic was 'Hong Kong in the Eyes of Foreigners (Part 1) – Germans'. Anne Knabe, a German who works at the Marketing and Sales Department of Hong Kong Ballet was interviewed and she talked about her feelings and experience towards Hong Kong. The following passage talks about Gorgor:
"
The Passing Away of Gorgor Was Most Unforgettable.
For her, the passing of Leslie Cheung (Gorgor) was the most unforgettable memory during her stay in Hong Kong. For Anne, Gorgor had given her the greatest impression. Every single movement of Gorgor was a kind of force that drove Anne to learn more about Hong Kong. Gorgor was also one of the bridges that led her to contact Hong Kong. She had been thinking of contacting Gorgor all the time, but that becomes impossible now. His passing away seems to have made Hong Kong lost part of its soul."
Many thanks to Daydreamer!

AAIFF event in New York is gong to screen "Nomad" on July, 21 at 3:30 pm. The Official Website of Asian American International Film Festival 2007 reported about "Nomad" as follows:

Shocking and controversial for its depiction of sexual liberation, "Nomad" generated so much social outcry when it was released in Hong Kong that it was sent back for a second round of censorship review. In the tradition of films about youngsters living dangerously such as "Rebel Without a Cause" and "The Wild One", "Nomad" follows four friends, including one played by the very young and baby-faced Leslie Cheung ("Happy Together", "Farewell My Concubine"), as they discover each other and the world around them. Permeating with a sense of ennui, nihilism, and decadence, "Nomad" "beautifully captures the carefree style of Hong Kong's youth" (International Herald Tribune (UK)). Although the sexual content in the film is more conceptual than graphic, it was scandalous for the mores of the early 80s Hong Kong. In one sequence, one couple has sex on the same night they meet! In one of the most memorable sex scenes in HK cinema, a couple makes love on the upper deck of a brightly lit, moving tram. All of these take place against the backdrop of a fast-changing society: economic disparity, love/hate relationships with foreign cultures, and a sense of alienation in the face of a shifting world. "Nomad" laid the groundwork for later films like Wong Kar-wai's "Days of Being Wild" (1990), sharing similar themes and visual style.

HONG KONG STAR - LESLIE CHEUNG

The Chinese movie star Leslie Cheung primarily got popular through movies made by Wong Kar Wai and through his portrayal of the swordsmen Ning Tsai-Shen in Hark Tsui's action movie 'A Chinese Ghost Story'. The documentary about the tragic fate of Leslie Cheung also enlightens about the 30 decisive years that changed Hong Kong Cinema.

The faces of asian actors and actresses such as Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung, Jet Li and Jackie Chan are also present in the cinemas of the western world. Even famous companies have used their faces for commercials. Still there are extraordinary stars in Canton and Hong Kong, that are admired in all of Asia, from China to Japan and South Korea to Singapore, but are being relatively unknown in the West. One of those is the actor and singer Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing. More than a quarter of the world’s population admires him as a movie icon and by that he stands for the whole industry. Leslie Cheung never had the same exotic flair that outside of Asia was considered so appealing. He didn’t practice martial arts and he was not an action hero, but primarily a pop star and an actor. Most of all he embodied the endeavours and worries of the Cantonese population. On April 1st 2003 Leslie Cheung commited suicide. This death that was covered all over the media and had left deep impressions on his Asian fans was hardly covered by the Western media. Nonetheless the Chinese voted the artist in various polls to be the most popular actor of the country in 2005. The documentary enlightens about the tragical figure of Leslie Cheung by remembrances of John Woo, Ang Lee, Maggie Cheung and Wong Kar-Wai that co-founded Hong Kong Cinema with him.

'The Grand Theatre' to be screened next year to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Leslie Cheung's death - Shooting of the 30 episode TV serial, 'The Grand Theatre' in memory of Gor Gor Leslie Cheung has accelerated in pace at the present moment inside the Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios. Vanness Wu and Korean actress, Park Ji Yoon are the leading male and female role respectively. After 'Wonder Woman 2007', this is the second collaboration between Hong Kong Mandarin Film Co. Ltd and Shanghai's Qin Jia Yuan Movie and Television Co. Ltd. According to Hong Kong producer and art director, Raymond Wong, this film is the sequel to Leslie Cheung's 'The Phantom Lover'. This serial is estimated to be released early next year during the 5th anniversary of Gor Gor's passing. Screenwriter cum director of the film, Clifton Ko, displayed at the event a movie poster of 'The Phantom Lover' of yesteryear with the image of the silhouette of Leslie Cheng on it. Clifton Ko said, "This poster will be used in the film; at the same time with the permission and agreement of Gor Gor's family, there will be several recollection scenes of Leslie Cheung in the serial. Clifton Ko added that he started to work on the script for this serial in the latter part of 2003; there were 8 draft amendments made to the script. Whenever he sat down to write the script, he involuntarily thought of Leslie Cheung. To him, Gor Gor's persistence and perseverance towards the arts and his earnest work ethic are unforgettable. Hence he attempts to apply Gor Gor's professional spirit in the production of this serial and will make every effort to strive for perfection. Raymond Wong disclosed the reason for selecting Korean actress Park Ji Yoon for the female lead was because in 2002 at a karaoke session with Gor Gor, he had strongly recommended Park Ji Yoon's song, 'Sunginshik' to him. It was obvious that Gor Gor held her in high esteem; therefore Raymond Wong specially made a trip to Korea in search of her to play the role. Pak Ji Yoon regards her role seriously; she is proactively learning the Chinese language. At today's press release gathering, she greeted everyone in Mandarin and won the praises and appreciation from the entire audience present at the conference. Vanness Wu has not made any TV series in the past 3-4 years. He was excited when he read the script of 'The Grand Theatre'. He said he has always regarded Leslie Cheung as the most outstanding actor and it was an honour to act in this serial. Cameras started to roll for 'The Grand Theatre' last month right in the hot summer heat of the Jiangnan region. Each day's filming was like being in a sauna for Vanness Wu dressed in full suit with layers of clothing underneath because the temperature inside the studios reached as high as 50 degrees Celsius some days. However he believes there is a positive side to having so many layers of clothing for the chances of exposing himself accidentally would be slim; moreover he would not need to go on a diet to keep fit but he still maintains a regular exercise routine doing a few rounds around the hotel block to avoid any gastroenteritis brought on by the heat. He is very careful about his food intake consuming only vegetables and chicken soup. He added that the major obstacle in working on a Hong Kong serial production is the language problem but he has been diligently learning Cantonese in the course of filming this serial and he is able to understand the language now. Happy Birthday to Leslie

Fans from around the world gather to remember Leslie Cheung on his 51st birthday - On Leslie Cheung's (Gor Gor) 51st birthday, his good friends and fans held their respective activites to remember his birthday.  Early yesterday outside Gor Gor's former residence in Kadoorie Hill there were many bouquet of flowers placed by his fans from Japan, Malaysia/Singapore and Australia. In the evening there was also a fans' gathering. Although it has been 4 years since his passing, Gor Gor is still in the hearts of many.

Gathering in Kadoorie Hill - Since the death of Gor Gor, his good friend, Daffy Tong still lives at Kadoorie Hill.  Yesterday afternoon Gor Gor's former assistant, Kenneth, his good friend Suzi Wong, Lin Yin Fai, Florence Chan and her son began arriving at the Kadoorie Hill residence one after another.  Mrs. Chan's son brought with him quite a few large cartons of takeaway meals from Fook Lam Moon.  Gor Gor's birthday has become a day of reunion for them. Florence Chan brought along a handmade gift of red paper cranes by some Japanese fans. These cranes represent his fans' blessings to him from afar and will  probably be kept inside the house. There were also fans from Japan that made a special trip here to remember Gor Gor. They expressed that each time they come to Hong Kong, they never missed having Gor Gor's favourite beef noodles at Gau Kee in Central as a way of remembering their idol.

At night fans held a banquet dinner at a leading hotel under the theme of 'Hot Summer 91207'.  Due to the space constraints at the venue, it was a banquet of only 26 tables. Gor Gor's past performances were screened on stage. Organisers selected Gor Gor's catchy songs to match  with the atmosphere. A limited number of environmental friendly bags went on sale at the event venue; the proceeds from the sale of these bags go towards funding the forthcoming Leslie Cheung Film Exhibition to be held in Korea, Japan and Mainland China. Memories of a Lost Star - September 12, 1956, was the birth date of the late Hong Kong star Leslie Cheung. His Internet fan club (www.leslietong.com) is now presenting a special photo exhibition to commemorate the life of the talented artist at the Shanghai Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Cheung's singing career began 30 years ago and his fans were dismayed when he committed suicide in Hong Kong by jumping from a hotel in 2003. These photos as well as some movie posters offer a retrospective look at some of his moments of glory in the limelight. Cheung had a tough childhood after the divorce of his parents. He studied at Leeds University in northern England. In 1976 he took second prize at ATV Asian Music Contest. The next year he signed on at the Rediffusion Television (now Asia Television) and his career started. In 1983, Cheung released his first hit song, "The Wind Blows On" and the energetic "fast" tune "Monica" in 1984 won him huge popularity around Asia. Cheung's acting talents were a highlight of contemporary Chinese cinema. He starred with Tony Leung in Wong Kar-wai's famous movies "Happy Together," "Ashes of Time" and "Day of Being Wild," which won him many film awards.
One of the most impressive characters Cheung took on was as Chen Dieyi, a Peking Opera singer in Chinese mainland director Chen Kaige's award-winning film, "Farewell My Concubine." This landmark film not only won director Chen Kaige a joint Palme d'Or (with "The Piano") at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination, but also demonstrated Cheung's exquisite performance skills.
Cheung's latest wax figure in the role of Chen dressed in typical Peking Opera dress is also on display at Shanghai Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. For more information about the exhibition, please log on

Fans celebrate 51st birthday of late Leslie Cheung - Hong Kong fans of late Hong Kong actor-singer Leslie Cheung celebrated what would have been his 51st birthday by laying flowers at his former home and watching videos of his performances, news reports said on Thursday. Apple Daily ran a photo showing a wreath and a birthday cake laid beside Cheung's star. On Wednesday, fans left flowers and gifts at Cheung's former home and the luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel, where Cheung jumped from when he committed suicide in April 2003, Apple Daily said. Ming Pao Daily News said among the gifts were hundreds of red paper cranes made by Japanese fans. Cheung was an accomplished singer and actor who appeared in director Chen Kaige's Oscar-nominated Farewell My Concubine. Later on Wednesday, fans gathered for a 26-table banquet at a Hong Kong hotel, where they watched videos of Cheung's performances, Ming Pao said. - AP. Source: The Straits Times

Cheung Chilam: Leslie Will Always Be In Our Hearts - Although Leslie has left us for more than four years, he will always be remembered not only by his ardent fans but also his friends. The next day after Leslie's birthday, Chilam posted a photo that he took with Leslie and Jacky Cheung taken in August 2002 in his blog. In addition he wrote a birthday message for Leslie: "Yesterday was Leslie's birthday. I'd like to wish him a happy birthday. Hope he's happy no matter wherever he is! In fact, I always feel that he has never left us. I'm still playing his CD in my car, the TV is showing his movies, and I'm humming his songs... I really think he has never left since he is already living in the hearts of each one of us who loves him, forever in our hearts." - Source: Oriental Daily reported by LeslieCheung.net and LeslieTong.com

The exhibition 'Riding a melodic tide' dedicated to Cantopop's domination of the Chinese entertainment world opened on November 11, 2007 at the top floor wing of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Shatin, Hong Kong. The exhibition will last until August 4th 2008. According to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum website "the idea behind this Cantopop exhibition was sparked by a generous donation to the museum of memorabilia from the career of Roman Tam, the godfather of Cantopop, from his sisters Ms Tam Man-yuk and Ms Tam Ming-yuk in 2006. Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, co-presented by Radio Television Hong Kong and jointly organized by the School of Journalism and Communication of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the exhibition will showcase stage costumes, scores by composers and lyricists, music awards and many other items marking important events in the history of Cantopop. Some have been selected from the museum's own collections while others have been loaned from public and private organizations and collectors. A pop mix of artefacts, photos and audiovisual programmes, the exhibition traces how this musical genre has progressed from the 1950s to the present day, describing its relationship to social change, the influence of the mass media and the development of Hong Kong's music industry." Six super stars sparkling and will never dim - "When you look at the stars in the sky, do you think about me? Can you remember my face which smiled for you more than the stars..."  Every time when  hearing this classic song of James Wong, which star would you think of ?  Leslie Cheung once said: "I only wish when you talk about the music of 90s, you can remember me, and you grew up with my songs..." The Hong Kong Pop Music was created by super stars, but it's a pity that we lost 6 super stars of our music industry - Roman Tam, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Teresa Tang, Danny Chan, Wong Ka-kui.  They once shone, songs they sang were the medicine for our souls.  Even though they can't stand on the stage to sing for the music lovers of their songs, their songs still last forever.  There short but bright lives created 6 'Everlasting Legends'. A TV program that will air every Saturday in Hong Kong between December 22, 2007 to February 2, 2008 will be dedicated to these six super starts by RTHK. There will be a total of 6 episodes, each episode honoring a superstar who has left us: Roman Tam, Anita Mui, Teresa Tang, Leslie Cheung, Wong Ka Kui and Danny Chan. The episode on Leslie will be aired on January 12th 2008 which will be hosted by Karen Mok, Michael Lai, Florence Chan, Ti Lung and fans worldwide. Florence Chan announced that she's going to organize 10 concerts in remembrance of Leslie the coming 401 and 912. They will even travel to cities in China and Japan. She has in mind to include Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung, Carina Lau, Karen Mok, Eason Chan and Chan Kit Ling. News in Chinese on Oriental Daily and The Sun, source LeslieTong.com. Many thanks to C.

Memorial Concert to mark 5th anniversary of Leslie Cheung's passing. Song Tribute by Jacky Cheung and Eason Chan on 401 - This year marks the 5th anniversary of the death of Gor Gor Leslie Cheung. According to reports, Florence Chan will hold a memorial concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum, on 1 April. Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan, Karen Mok, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Karena Lau Ka Ling are among some of the stars taking part in this concert. Almost imperceptibly, Gor Gor has already left us for close to 5 years but his charismatic demeanour on stage, his voice and his smile, is still cherished and dear to the hearts of all his fans, forever unforgettable! It is reported that Florence Chan is currently busy organizing a memorial concert to be held at the Coliseum. A group of Gor Gor's friends including Jacky Cheung, The Grasshoppers, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Karena Lau Ka Ling, Eason Chan, Eliza Chan and Karen Mok have been invited to perform at the concert. When contacted by reporters on the above matter, Florence Chan said, "It is confirmed that a memorial concert will be held on 1 April at the Coliseum. Besides Hong Kong we are also planning to hold the concert in other places such as Japan, Shanghai, Chengdu and Hangzhou between the period of 1 April to 12 September. Altogether there will be a total of 10 concert shows. There will also be another concert for Gor Gor’s birthday in September but the venue has yet to be determined." Florence Chan said the Japanese fans have been very true to Gor Gor; every anniversary they would send her handmade paper cranes to be passed onto Daffy Tong. They are extremely tender-hearted. Touching on the production of the concert, Florence Chan guaranteed that it will be a production from the heart. She said, "It will be in the form of a concert. (What item will Tony Leung and Karena Lau be performing?) Definitely something related to Gor Gor but their availability has yet to be confirmed." As to whether Daffy Tong will be attending the concert, she replied, "Concert details to be determined first." Moreover Florence Chan expressed that the most difficult thing was to accommodate the availability of the artists that are performing at the concert; "If anyone has been left out of the invitation list, I hope they will get in touch with me on their own accord." Agent plans memorial concert for Leslie Cheung - Florence Chan, the former agent of late Hong Kong superstar Leslie Cheung, is striving to put together a star-studded concert on April 1 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Cheung's death. The show is likely to be held at Hong Kong Coliseum, where singer-actor Cheung once performed for 33 consecutive nights in late 1989. Chan says she is currently busy contacting Cheung's friends, local stars such as Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung, Karen Mok and Eason Chan, but the final line-up is yet to be confirmed. She has also sent out invitations via the media to those who want to perform for the special night. The dedicated agent, who was also one of Cheung's closest friends, is hoping to eventually expand her plan and launch a memorial concert series from April 1 to September 12, which was Cheung's birthday. On April 1, 2003, 46-year-old Leslie Cheung shocked the Hong Kong entertainment industry by leaping from the 24th floor of a local hotel. He left a suicide note saying he had been suffering from depression. Source: CRIENGLISH.com - many thanks to Simie.

Florence Chan has constructed a website with news on "Miss You Much Leslie" concert to be held on April 1st 2008 in Hong Kong. This is the URL for the website: http://ileslie.hk/tc/index.html

It seems there will be a mirror site in English but this is currently under construction. Let's all do our best to leave many messages of love to our dearest as we remember the fifth year of his passing! You can register here: http://ileslie.hk/forum/ucp.php?mode=register . Also, Florence has invited Chris Babida to re-arrange the memorial song which she had written for Leslie.  Please go to here to download it: http://www.ileslie.hk/tc/lyrics.html.

Florence Chan held a press conference yesterday at Miramar Hotel about "Miss You Much Leslie" concert. News in Chinese on Ming Pao - The Sun - Oriental Daily - WenWeiPo - Sing Pao - Takung Pao. The fifth anniversary of the demise of Leslie Cheung will be marked on April 1st and a press conference was held today by his former manager and good friend, Florence Chan, to announce a memorial concert titled 'Miss You Much Leslie' that will be held at the Hong Kong Coliseum on that date. A total of 14 invited guests will take part in the concert; they are Jacky Cheung,, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Deannie Yip, Winnie Hsin, Anita Yuen, Eliza Chan, Joyce Cheng, Sylvia Chang, Anthony Wong Yiu Ming, The Grasshoppers, Karen Mok, Nadia Chan, William So and Andy Hui. As the concert art consultant, Jacky Cheung contributed many valuable suggestions and he will also perform on stage on that day. Proceeds from the concert minus all the expenses will be donated to charity. It is hoped that the concert would be able to raise funds amounting to a healthy seven figure sum. Mrs. Chan revealed that tickets will go on sale on March 12th and all the priority reservation tickets have already been snapped up. She added that Jacky will be the artistic director for the event and Jet Tone films have also provided 200 special souvenir sets of Leslie's film Happy Together, which will be autographed by co-star Tony, to be auctioned for charity. Mr Tong is going to lend some of the Passion Tour concert costumes worn by Leslie and also some precious manuscripts and photos of Leslie in order to make souvenirs to sell for charity as well. However Florence said that Mr Tong is unlikely to appear on the stage at the concert.
The song "Fireworks" was written by Mrs. Chan for Leslie. To mark the occasion, the song has had a special rearrangement and the music video for this song will be available for download from the official website, so that fans everywhere can join in remembrance of Leslie. A second memorial concert will be held later on in the year on the date of Leslie's birthday, September 12th to mark the end of the season of events to remember the singing and acting legend. The second concert will take a different format and feature an indoor and an outdoor show that maybe will be broadcasted by satellite to many different countries worldwide to allow more of Leslie's many fans to enjoy it. Mrs. Chan also hoped that the record companies of the performers will allow them to produce a DVD of the April 1st concert to raise even more money for charity. Due to copyright of the other artistes, it will take some time but she hopes this DVD would be available before 912 this year.
Mrs. Chan appeared to be quite tearful during the broadcast of the "Fireworks" music video at the press conference
: she had tears in her eyes watching the new MV of 'Scalding Fireworks' and also choked on her tears at one stage during the press conference according to the video report. She said that the concept for the concert had been prepared a year ago, but she has been very busy, so she has only started preparing for the concert since February. She said that she has never been able to pull together her emotions since Leslie passed away, but decided that it was time to put her sadness behind her after five years. Florence said that all these few years, many Leslie fans have approached her via letters and e-mail asking her to organise a memorial concert for Leslie. She said she hadn't done it until now because she still could not let go of the events of April Fool's Day, 2003.  However as this is Leslie's fifth death anniversary, Florence felt that if she was to organise this concert, it would have to be this year so that she could fulfil her wish of putting on a concert in Leslie's memory. She also revealed that she planned to do this during the tenth anniversary but it was too far away and she was worried that she may not have the strength or stamina to do this in ten years' time so she decided to do it this year. Joyce Cheng, Lydia Shum's 20-year-old daughter will perform Leslie's song, 'I Am Of Strong Sentiments' which is the theme from the TV serial, 'Once Upon An Ordinary Girl' as a tribute to her mother who loved this song very much and also to honour Leslie's memory.  Florence said that it took her a year to plan this concert and during this time she spent a lot of time at the hospital visiting Lydia Shum, so Lydia knew about this concert before her death. She had remarked that she loved to hear Leslie singing the song, 'I Am Of Strong Sentiments.' Joyce was not on the original list of performers for the concert, but Mrs. Chan explained that one of Lydia Sum's favorite songs was Leslie's 'I Am Of Strong Sentiments' and although the song was included in the run down, someone else was arranged to sing it. After Lydia's death, she found that it was more fitting for Joyce to sing this song as a tribute to both Leslie and Lydia. Many thanks to Simie. Source: http://www.leslie-cheung.net/.

More news about "Miss You Much Leslie" concert to be held on April 1st 2008 in Hong Kong on WenWeiPo, The Sun, Takung Pao. Florence Chan said: "In my heart, he's never left". It's so true!!!!

'Miss You Much Leslie' memorial concert overseas performances cancelled; Hong Kong concert tickets practically non-existent - Although Leslie Cheung has left us for 5 years but the devotion of Leslie Cheung's fans towards him has never faded. Thus when the news of the memorial concert organised by Florence Chan was released, it generated great interest and enthusiasm from the fans. Yesterday however, reporters understood from Florence Chan that all performances of the memorial concert within the Mainland have been cancelled along with performances in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and Japan. "In the beginning, my plan was to hold 10 concert performances in Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou from 1st April, Gor Gor's death anniversary, to 12th September. However, requests from some regions which stipulated that the concert must have certain stars in the line-up have violated the original intention of this concert. I do not wish to have anyone buying tickets for the concert just for the sake of watching some particular artists. My tickets for this concert are to raise funds for charity; I am doing this for Leslie Cheung. None of the names and pictures of the stars appear on the promotional posters in Hong Kong. Unfortunately many of the cities are not able to comply; it is most regrettable. In addition, it is very difficult to co-ordinate the participating artists' schedules. I will have to fork out a large sum of money for all the related expenditure so I want to save this money for donation to more charitable causes and fulfilling Leslie's wishes along the way." Florence Chan emphasized that the income generated from this concert was never an issue for consideration; the main aim of the concert is to remember Leslie Cheung. Jettone Films has generously donated 200 Happy Together 10th Anniversary 1997-2006 DVD/CD Box Set Limited Edition with Tony Leung Chiu Wai's autograph for charity auction. Other auction items include GorGor's draft manuscripts and precious photos. Gor Gor's good friend, Daffy Tong has also promised to lend Gor Gor's concert costumes to be transformed into souvenir items for sale. To satisfy fans of Leslie Cheung from all over the world, Florence Chan is considering a DVD production of the memorial concert to share with fans that were unable to attend the Hong Kong concert. "I am still deliberating the possibility of a live telecast of the Sept 12 concert so that more friends are able to watch our concert." Due to the cancellations of the concert performances in all the other regions, tickets for the April 1st concert that went on sale to the public in Hong Kong yesterday were completely sold out within an hour after ticket sales opened which is a record in the history of the Hong Kong Coliseum concert ticket sales. Yesterday around noon, Florence Chan informed reporters, "In fact, tickets that were sold internally ran out a while ago but we reserved some tickets for sale to the public. I am very pleased with the results; it clearly states that Leslie Cheung has not been forgotten." - Source: Netandtv - kindly translated by Simie, many many thanks! See also WenWeiPo and MingPao.
