ADONAI AND I 'Adonai
and I'
Adonai and I is the band-project of the
american musician David 'Solid' Gould, already stable member of the most
important american reggae outfit , John Brown's Body out of Ithaca, NY.
This 'side-project' band lead by the bass master (which consists of many
members of JBB in addiction with musicans form Pressure Cooker Band and
other american vocalists and players of instruments) was born with
the intent to create an unique style of reggae merging classic hebrew
chants, melodies and verses with the roots and dub sounds ('Adonai'
is a term reffered to the Almighty) .The similitudes between the Jewish
culture and the rasta one are more than evident and , on the other hand,
a lot of reggae artists often have referred (in their melodies and lyrics)
to biblical resources. The result of this experiment is great, on of
the best things I've listend to this year. David Gould guides his band
towards the classical (and myghty) marleyesque sound - but with a very
tuff dub edge - wisely without any intention to exaggerate with the
sound experimentations (as many have done blending sounds from
different cultures): the evocative atmospheres and sounds of the ancient
hebrew culture are committed to the beautiful vocals of Akira Fujjita,
Lisa Gould and Amy Glicklich and to the splendid injections of the very
strong brass section. The final result is that of a compelling,
inventive and fascinating reggae album. Great stuff.
