KATT 'CHANT'
Rising
from Jamaica’s North Coast Hotel circuit and aiming to the international
stardom in reggae music, here comes Katt a promisingly rasta singer who
could very soon
become
a very important figure in reggae music. His debut album, entitled
‘Chant’, produced by Norman King and released on the singer’s own
Jamaican label, ‘Katt’s Productions’, is a very enjoyable set which
becomes stronger and stronger each time you listen to it. Katt’s style
is original but firmly set in the tradition of Jamaican singers like
Luciano, Frankie Paul and Sugar Minott. His voice is hot, his melodies are
sweet, rootsy and heartical and showcase an artist who perfectly rides the
very tuff riddims provided by his musicians (lead by Norman King) and who
sometimes is able even to handle a delivery somewhat a bit similar to the
sing-jay style, if necessary. The rhythms can stand comparisons with those
produced by labels like Penthouse or X-terminator (‘Natty’ a single
off the album is being distributed throughout Jamaica by Penthouse label
itself) and make this cd a true compelling set with the second half
literally mesmerizing. The highlights on this album, among the others,
are ‘Mama’, ‘Natty’ (a true rub-a-dub killer!) and the
mighty ‘Lucifer’s Powder’ (a term which the conscious singer
wittingly refers to the hard drugs). It is strange that international
labels like Ras or VP haven’t still given this singer a deal for the
international distribution of this release!
