With
the release of this ‘LKJ in Dub vol 3’ (ten years after ‘LKJ in
Dub vol.2’ and twenty after the first chapter) Linton Kwesi Johnson
confirms his love and deep attachment for the musical aspect of his
work, and that’s such an unusual thing among the so-called dub poets,
who often tend to dismiss the musical part of their production willing
to emphasise its literary identity. Not LKJ, he has always been a
full-circle reggae artist, and a great one. And so, this third chapter
of his dub excursions - always in company of his fellow
bassist-dubmaster, the great Dennis Bovell - showcases Linton (who also
grabs the controls at the mixing desk) debuting on bass. The set is in
the most part composed of the dub versions of the tracks present in
LKJ’s last vocal album, ‘More Time’, released in 1998, with the
addiction of a couple of fresh riddim tracks, and confirms the duo’s
verve and inventive while creating dub vibes which allows them to give
birth here to a string of dub versions absolutely delicious, never
repetitive, and always captivating. A fresh and enjoyable work, highly
recommendable for all the dub music lovers.
