OOKLAH
THE MOC 'Ites Massive'
Have
you ever heard about the so called 'Jahwaian Music'? No? Well, this terms
refers to the music of the young and stamping hawaian reggae scene which
is a new force in the reggae global market. Do you remember, for example,
the Grammy nominated 'Island Warriors'? Good, let's move on. Well, what we
know is that Jahwaian Music is an hybrid which merges reggae with more
poppy
and hip-hoppy kind of sounds and so, in these terms, a group like
the mighty Ooklah The Moc is untypical. Yes, the group formed by Jah Gumby
(picture),
Ras Bird and their compadres is a powerful
strictly roots and dub band, a first class conscious outfit. Their debut
album, entitled 'Ites massive' show us a group of musicians of
unpredictable sharpness, livity and ability in a true state of grace.
Their music is a sort of
'one drop dub', a powerful kind of relaxed and easy skanking-styled
music with energetic injections of dub which make the final product
irresistible. The sweet-sweet-sweet melodies of Ras Bird, the evocative
sound of the much present horns and Jah Gumby's solid and very original
bass lines make this album higly enjoyable. The only little flaw in this
album is that the riddims are a bit repetitive, as there are a bit
too many slow paced relaxed tunes, but this is overall an higly
reccommend set, especially to those who are looking for good, 'old time'
roots
reggae music.
