Vendicari marsh is the most natural place left, as it has had nearly any alteration on man's part. Because of that Vendicari can be considered the most representative naturally wet area in Italy. The Convention of Ramsar acknowledges the enormous importance Vendicari marshes have, by including themselves in the list of the most internationally interesting wet places.
In 1984 a decree set up the Natural Reserve "Oasis and Fauna of Vendicari" and entrusts its management to the State Forest administration of Sicilian Region.
The whole Reserve has been provided with suitable paths which, branching off throug it, let people look at the most meaningful places. Those visitors who would like to get a deeper knowledge of the area, are suggested to ask for guides who are freely availaible.
The istitutional aim of this Reserve,
is that of letting the fauna build their nets and stay on and recovers
the psammophilous and mediterranean vegetation.
The careful visitor, however, can
soon find out that the purpose of Vendicari marshes goes far beyond
that. In fact in 574 ectars of territory there is such a variety of different
environments which makes it a real natural laboratory.
