What is Warhammer 40,000 about?

Warhammer 40,000 is a miniatures-based tactical combat game which takes place in a far future, very dark and gothic. Mankind is being assaulted on all sides by Space Orks, Eldar, Chaos, and other foes. The relentless Tyranid hoards are invading the galaxy in search of fresh genetic material for their bio-engineered race.
It's not a happy place.
But it makes for a great wargame.
You buy armies with points, each vehicle, squad or character figure being worth so many points. Each race has army lists, showing what types of troops are available for that army, and their statistics showing how well they fight, shoot, move, etc. Wargear and other additional weapons can also be purchased. To represent your army, you use small plastic or metal figures, about 1.5 inches high for the average joe. A big part of the game is painting and setting up your army; some people don't play at all, but are just into the painting side of the hobby. Combat takes place on a tabletop, usually 4 x 8 feet. There are no grids, so measuring for movement and shooting is done with rulers/tape measures/whatever. Terrain covers the table to give it a realistic look (and to create a better game). The game runs in turns, with each turn divided into phases for moving, shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and psychic powers. Overall it's pretty fast paced and exciting.

 Warhammer 40k

Last update: December, 8 1999

Warhammer 40,000 third edition

All right, the new edition is now out.... well it is out since last september or so.
We are now playing with the new rulest; I like this new ruleset, it is better than 2nd edition. It is less detailed but more playable and it seems more clear than the pesky 2nd ed. At present time there aren't powerful characters or psykers unbalancing the game. So it is my piece of cake...

There are a lot of similarities to Epic 40k and this 3rd edition is aimed to big battles.
The dark side of the new edition is the need of more iniatures to play. They lowered point costs so a 2000 pts old edition army (with no named charachters) is now no more than 800 1200 points.
It is a big economical drawback but in my opinion playing with new rules is worth the money you'll spend to buy more miniatures.
Or better you can play more entertaining battles with your old minis and new rules !!!!
I hope GW will take this line and future products will be not unbalancing this game.

I'm rebuilding pages about 40k to match the new edition, the old stuff will remain under the 2nd edition pages of the site.

I'm working on a Space Marines and Imperial Guard excel and I'll upload the zipped .xls (Office 97 and 2000) in this section.
Check my Imperial Guard page to see my 3rd edition regiment 3122 points of legal army out of a possible 3587 points total (excluding the Commissars)!!!

Warhammer 40k 2nd edition stuff

We play 40k since January 1996 and it is now an important part of our hobbies.
We don't like superhero's army, so we don't include any special characters in our armies.
Instead I like armoured power !!

  • Do you want more info about my 2nd ed Imperial Guard Army ??
  • Battle report:  September 13, 1996 - Imperial Guard vs Blood Angels.

    Spreadsheet can help you !!

Assembling an army for playing can be a tedious affair, so I use everytime a spreadsheet.
Excel 5 can be a unvaluable allied if you can use it !!
I wrote two little Excel 5 application sheet, they are good but are not complete.
My first excel spreadsheet is a Space Marine army (without vehicles section), the second excel sheet deals with Imperial Guard.
I'll update these scripts... until then I can provide you actual version 0.9 !

Please e-mail me your opinions and suggestions about these Excel sheets !
