( SUPPOSED) FLAG OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBOANGA, 1899

In may 18, 1899 - Fort Pilar and its Spanish troops, in Southern Philippines, surrendered to the Revolutionary Government of Zamboanga. Five days after
(May 23) The Spanish troops evacuate the city of Zamboanga for good, after burning down most of the city's buildings in contempt of the Zamboangueños' revolt against them.
Vicente Alvarez was chosen by his fellow Zamboangueños to be their first president and popular leader of the revolutionary government established immediately after the former Spanish garrison troops evacuated to Manila.
The rivalry between the local revolutionary leadership of President Vicente Alvarez and opposition leader Isidoro Midel allowed for the easy subjugation of the city by the American forces when Midel sided with the Americans upon their arrival. As a reward for his help, the new American rulers allowed Isidoro Midel to continue as president of the new Zamboanga Republic for about sixteen (16) months, against the will of the people, after former president Vicente Alvarez fled to Mercedes, then later to Basilan, when the Americans arrived and took control of the fort del Pilar.

( SUPPOSED ) FLAG OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBOANGA , 1899

We don't have strong evidences ( the few of them are based on oral accounts) about this flag ; we just can say that one flag ( see on the left side ) with the "zul-fiqar" or sword of Ali is a typical symbol of the Muslim not a christian symbol, so we can't understand why the Men of Vicente Alvarez, almost all catholic adopted it.
The symbol represented by two rings is unknown, maybe it represents the Christian and the Muslim (Moro ) peoples of Zamboanga.
The blue color is not a common color of Zamboanga and Mindanao area and its meaning is unknown.
The two crossed kris and spear showed on another version of the flag remind us to the flags of the Royal Sultanate of Sulu , also adopted since 1899 to the present days.
