DUCK BAKER
Celtic music offers the fingerstyle guitarist many beautiful and haunting melodies, as well as intriguing dance rhythms and exciting tunes. Duck is one of the leading fingerstyle guitarists arranging melodies from the Celtic repertoire and he explores the possibilities of playing a wide variety of Celtic music.
The music of Ireland offers beautiful and haunting melodies as well as intriguing dance rhythms and exciting tunes. In the last years fingerstyle guitarists have turned their attention and arranging skills to Celtic music. Duck Baker is in the vanguard of this movement. He can be heard on the GUITAR ARTISTRY albums The Music Of Ireland and Irish Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes And Airs.
Gospel music is such a familiar part of our cultural and musical landscape. It offers the fingerstyle guitarist a vast repertoire of melodic and lyrical compositions. In this lesson, Duck Baker explores and explains how this music can be arranged for fingerstyle guitar. Duck teaches arrangements of six well known Gospel songs. These are played in standard and dropped-D tunings.
 
 
Duck Baker è uno dei migliori e più geniali chitarristi acustici in stile fingerpicking della sua generazione, è dotato di tecnica raffinata ed elegante ed è in grado di interpretare con maestria eccelsa temi che ripercorrono l'intera storia della musica.
Nato a Washington D.C. nel 1949 come Richard Royal Baker IV, è cresciuto a Richmond in Virginia, ha iniziato con il rock, per poi dedicarsi al blues tradizionale suonato nelle coffeehouse locali.
Nei primi anni settanta si trasferì a San Francisco dove si confrontò con differenti stilemi musicali, la summa dei quali è già identificabile nei suoi primi lavori incisi per la mitica etichetta america Kicking Mule, molto nota tra gli appassionati e specializzata nella scoperta e nella valorizzazione di un'intera generazione di grandi talenti chitarristici che in breve tempo divennero dei veri capiscuola, proprio come Duck Baker.
Nel tempo Duck si è costruito un repertorio vasto e completo che spazia dalla pura tradizione irlandese e celtica a tematiche di american old-time music e bluegrass, da tematiche blues & gospel a composizioni ragtime e jazzistiche irresistibili...insomma Duck è un vero maestro !
I suoi arrangiamenti sono spesso “tecnicamente” impegnativi. Quel suo modo di appoggiare il mignolo della mano destra sulla tavola armonica per ottenere un sonorità più incisiva, ad esempio, è stato ampiamente spiegato da Franco Morone nel suo "Metodo per Chitarra Blues" edito dalla Berben. Il suo modo, invece, di eseguire le parti melodiche arpeggiandole con indice e medio è una tecnica dal sapore "contrabbassistico" originale ed efficace.
Le straordinarie qualità artistiche di questo fantastico maestro della chitarra fingerpicking sono documentate da una serie sconfinata di CD originali ed anche di numerosi video didattici, tutti di un elevato ed impareggiabile livello qualitativo, nonchè da una serie impressionante di collaborazioni con altrettanti mostri sacri della chitarra fingerpicking e della musica tradizionale, da John Renbourn a Stefan Grossman, da Molly Andrews a Leo Kottke, da Kieran Fahy a Jamie Findlay, da Maggie Boyle a Ben Paley....
Sia nei suoi lavori in studio, discografici e/o didattici, sia "on stage" Duck Baker ha dimostrato in maniera inequivocabile di possedere una cultura musicale immensa ed una tecnica unica e personale che gli consentono di passare con estrema disinvoltura attraverso i generi musicali più disparati che ha saputo assimilare e rendere propri.
Da alcuni anni vive stabilmente a Londra e questo gli ha permesso frequenti apparizioni concertistiche e didattiche nel nostro Paese dove gode di particolare popolarità ed è molto amato.
Ogni suo concerto è considerato un vero evento imperdibile !
Dopo i concerti dell'elegante ed intimista folk-singer inglese Steve Tilston nel mese di aprile e del tradizionalista e politicamente impegnato folk-singer scozzese Alistair Hulett nel mese di maggio, con il concerto di Duck Baker la rassegna si propone di esplorare i territori della musica acustica chitarristica di stampo fingerpicking con uno dei massimi interpreti della celtic guitar.
