Some visual aids about observer orientation.

The current orientation of the observer is not displayed so some visual aids should be very useful.

Description:

Taking inspiration from flight simulators some kind of visual orientation aids should be useful to avoid the disorienting sensations that the user should experiment sometimes during the simulation or when looses the control of the observer.

This feature should be very useful also when the observer is near to the body surfaces and travels (like a plane) between ground locations.

Obviously those visual aids must refer to a reference system. There are several possibilities (see FR23 for further details):

  • When in the outer space the galactic plane should be used;

  • When in solar system the ecliptic plane should be used;

  • When in the space nearby to bodies or when an object is selected the orientation of the body should be used;

  • When near to body surface the surface itself should be used.

A different celestial grid or visual aid should be displayed for each reference system.

A possible example (exaggerated) is shown in the following figure, but other solutions could be chosen.

Instead for example a small wireframe colored sphere should be displayed in a corner of the window.
