Trama e note

 
A Chicago si affrontano senza quartiere le bande di Lefty Schroeder e Gunner Gallagher mentre un procuratore distrettuale e un avvocato penalista si contendono l'amore di Nada Winthrop, figlia di un importante uomo d'affari. Quando il primo scopre che il padre della ragazza è il cervello della criminalità, questi viene ucciso. L'avvocato Meighan giura di vendicarlo, ma si ritrova ben presto al centro di una serie di ricatti. La dea ex - machina, a quanto è dato di capire, è Louise, la ragazza di Gunner Gallagher, dal fantasioso nome di Snuggles Joy, che tradirà il suo amante.
Il film cerca di sfruttare il successo del genere
gangster melodrama (in particolare Underworld della stessa Paramount); di solito esso non viene considerato molto nella filmografia della Brooks, ma il parere di William K. Everson, uno straordinario conoscitore dell'epoca del muto al pari di Henri Langlois e James Card, fa ritenere il contrario (come si può leggere nel fondamentale articolo Remembering Louise Brooks )
